When I started this project in 2017 I was interested in taking portraits that felt voyeuristic and intimate, but were consensual observations of the subjects as directed by myself. Now (March 2020) with the impending Covid-19 virus spreading throughout the world and our community, I felt the urge to continue this project. Maybe as a coping mechanism for the anxiety I feel, or maybe because artist’s are silly and narcissistic even in times of upheaval, I put up a post online asking for subjects and inquires started to quickly trickle in. Friend’s and friend’s of friends have become my subject’s as I try to feel connected to a community in a time when we are physically and emotionally separated. I cannot go online without reading misplaced judgement of others as they try to deal with the virus and being socially isolated in their own ways. My hope with this project is to connect my community again and bring awareness to the human response to a pandemic as well as isolation, the grief we feel as we mourn the habits and rituals we were used to and how we change our routine during a period of social distance.
